One of my most popular photographs is of a desolate stretch of highway on US 52 in North Dakota, just south of the town of Estevan, Saskatchewan. The horizon is flat as a pancake, and you can see a line of telephone poles fading off into the distance like some sort of optical illusion due to the light and profound emptiness of the area. If it weren’t for the fact that I always carry my camera right on the seat beside me I never would’ve captured this image that, while seemingly mundane, draws everyone’s eyes to it.
